Episode 45: Live Coaching: Getting to the Root of Your People-Pleasing Tendencies

In this episode...

Do you find yourself taking responsibility for other people’s unhappiness?

Do you often feel like it’s your job to fix things whenever someone else is dissatisfied or uncomfortable?

Do you find it difficult to assert your own desires or to enforce your own boundaries?

In this episode of Your Permission Prescription, I talk with Jen, a student in my Levin Life Coach Academy who’s getting certified as a life coach. She has a tendency to put herself in a place of suffering in order to make others feel better. It’s one of the hallmark traits of a people pleaser— and I’ve got some experience with that.

We spend some time getting to the root of this behavior: where it comes from, what causes it, and what we need to do to start giving ourselves permission to put our own needs first.

Listen to Your Permission Prescription: Episode 45 to get a peek behind the curtain into a life coach training session and a discussion into the unconscious motivations behind people-pleasing behavior.

What We Discuss & Highlights From Episode 45:

  • The unconscious reasons why we have a tendency to put other people’s needs before our own
  • One sneaky way that people pleasers tend to project feelings of unhappiness onto others—and then take responsibility for “fixing” those feelings
  • The importance of acknowledging what you want, and how to give yourself permission to consider your own needs first
  • Why it’s not our responsibility to manage someone else’s response to our truth
  • How to recognize when you’ve become too comfortable with your own discomfort
